Second wall grant: the wrap after cavity fill
Already had a wall insulation grant? You may now apply for a second wall measure. For most homes, that's the wrap.
Figures checked against seai.ie on 28 October 2026.
SEAI says: "If your home has previously received a grant for wall insulation, you may now apply for a second wall insulation measure."
Had cavity wall insulation? You can apply for internal or external. Had internal (dry lining)? External only. Had external (the wrap)? No second measure (seai.ie wall insulation page, checked 28 October 2026).

The wrap as a second measure
For most homes that had a cavity or internal grant, the wrap is the natural next step. The second measure is designed to let homes insulated with cavity fill or dry lining upgrade further, to make the home heat pump ready. The amounts are the standard external grants:
| Home type | External wall insulation grant |
|---|---|
| Detached house | €8,000 |
| Semi-D or end of terrace | €6,000 |
| Mid-terrace | €3,500 |
| Apartment | €3,000 |
All the usual rules apply: the home built and occupied before 31 December 2010, an MPRN, an SEAI-registered contractor, a grant offer before work starts, and every external wall fully insulated.
Why cavity homes often go external next
A cavity fill only insulates the gap between two leaves of block. The wrap adds a layer outside the whole wall, which also covers the edges of floors and the corners where heat escapes. On SEAI's figures the external grant for a semi-D is €6,000, against €1,300 for the cavity fill. Our sister site has more on the second wall insulation grant for cavity homes.
After dry lining: external only
Internal insulation can only be followed by external. Dry lining the same walls again isn't a second measure. If your old dry lining is damp or damaged, ask the contractor to look at it before the wrap goes on.
After the wrap: no second measure
No second wall measure is available. If the existing wrap is cracked or failing, that's a repair job for the original contractor or a new one, without a wall grant.
Timing the second measure
What matters is the order: grant offer first, then the work, then the post-works BER and the claim. If a heat pump is also in your plans, insulate first. SEAI asks older homes for a heat loss check before a heat pump grant, and wall insulation lowers the heat loss that check measures. See HLI in the glossary.
